Chapter 33
What is the ultimate fear? The answer to that question is relative to each person, and the answer for each person could change with the tide.
At the moment, Emily's ultimate fear was having everything she'd ever believed about herself, her very nature, turned on its head. This fear was overwhelming. It began when she reached out for the answer on Encounter, and seemed to increase ten-fold with every second that passed. It permeated her senses, and she was beginning to wonder if she would be able to go on. She actually considered turning tail and running from the tunnel.
It was a foregone conclusion that Sebastian knew. If he couldn't feel what she was feeling, he would at least have a sense of what she was feeling. For the time being, his mouth remained shut on the matter, and she was thankful for that.
She was pretty sure that David knew. The way he kept looking at her. He had to know. She'd been trying to keep her fear under wraps but to no avail. She was trembling from head to toe. She'd tried to keep her distance from David but had accidentally brushed up against him. Surely, he'd felt her trembling.
She'd lied to him. She didn't like lying to any of them but especially him. She loved him, and that love was reciprocated. Love is built on trust, and she had just betrayed that trust. But she felt that she didn't have a choice. The truth was...horrific. She couldn't tell him the truth. She could barely acknowledge the truth to herself. No wonder she'd thrown herself from a four-story window a thousand years earlier.
That didn't make any sense. Or did it? She had thrown herself from that window before the horrific event on Eden, but she was stuck in a temporal loop. Perhaps somewhere deep down inside, in her unconscious mind, she was aware of what she was going to be responsible for, and she was trying to stop herself. Perhaps she just loathed herself for being capable of such a horrific act. Perhaps it was a combination of the two. The former would make her feel a bit better. If she had thrown herself from that window in an attempt to stop herself, that would mean that she actually cared.
She wanted to slap herself. Of course she cared. She would be as terrified of the truth as she was if she didn't care.
Emily had no doubt that they were nearing the end of the tunnel. There was a soft glow in the distance. The sun's rays were trickling in through the foliage beyond the tunnel.
Moment of truth.
Ugh. She'd just about had her fill of those three words.
David put his hand on her shoulder. "Moment of truth."
She gave him a sidelong look. Did he really just say that? "Yep," she muttered. If nothing else, the coincidental timing of David's words had the effect of momentarily off-setting the fear that had turned her blood cold...but only momentarily. She was about to step into the light.
